Weekend Recap – Sept. 20-22

This past weekend the Coulee Region Chill opened up their 2019-2020 season with a three game road series against the St. Louis Jr. Blues.

On Friday, the Chill opened their season with a slow start as the Jr. Blues controlled the first two periods of the game with six goals to the Chill’s zero. During the third period of Friday’s game the Chill were finally able to find some momentum as Jacob Best scored the Chill’s first goal of the season on the powerplay with assists to both Marco Escobar and Parker Severson. That momentum was short lived as the Jr. Blues scored no more than one minute later. The Chill finished the period with one other goal coming from Parker Severson with assists to both Gadel Khismatullin and Drew Robertson. The Chill would fall in their season opener to a score of 7-2. Devin Naidow was in net for the Chill and was able to save 39 of 46 shots on the night.

On Saturday, the Chill bounced back strong as they scored two goals within the first two minutes of the game. The first goal coming from Flavien Fondadouze with an assist from Marco Escobar. Almost immediately after the first goal, Sam Vanderhoeven then found the net for the Chill with an unassisted goal. After two periods, the Chill led only by one and were looking to get their first win of the season. In the third period the Chill were able to seal the deal on their first win of the 2019-2020 season with a goal from Marco Escobar at the 19:36 mark. The assists for that goal coming from Flavien Fondadouze and Gijs De Schepper. Michael Janke was able to get the win in net for the Chill as he stopped 33 of 34 shots in his first start of the 2019-2020 season.

On Sunday, both teams came out fast looking to close out the series with a win as seven total goals were scored in the first period. After one, the Chill were slightly on top with a 4-3 lead. Goals from the Chill came from Flavien Fondadouze, Christopher Drews, and two from Parker Severson. With four goals in the period many other names hit the scoresheet with assists coming from Sam Vanderhoeven, two from Branwen Pollet, Marco Escobar, Jacob Best, and Gadel Khismatullin.

From here on out it was all St. Louis, though, as they scored three goals in the second period with nobody scoring in the third. The Chill fell short in the series as the Blues took a 6-4 victory. Gunnar Snyder was able to stop 33 of the 39 shots he faced in his first start of the 2019-2020 season.

Next up, the Chill will have a two game road series in Rochester, MN as they take on the Rochester Grizzlies. Both games will be played at the Rochester Recreation Center and will take place on Friday, October 4th @ 7pm and Saturday, October 5th @ 7pm.
