Goalie Matiss Kivlenieks was named 1st Star of the Week in the Midwest Division while forward Kevin Dineen was named an honorable mention after the Coulee Region Chill bested Minnesota Wilderness 2-1 in the three-game series.
Kivlenieks, native of Riga, Latvia, has continued his strong performance in the North American Hockey League since his dominating performance in the IIHF World Juniors Div. 1 Group A Championship, leading his home country of Latvia to a gold medal all while earning Goalie of the Tournament honors. This weekend he shut down the defending Robertson Cup Champions' offense, winning 6-1 Friday night and 3-2 in a shootout Saturday night.
Friday night Kivlenieks stopped 37/38 shots in the 6-1 win. Saturday night he stopped 40/42 shots en route to the 3-2 victory. In the shootout he came up big, stopping 2/3 Wilderness shooters. Kivlenieks is now 11-8 (8-1 since 12/31) with two shutouts, a 2.47 GAA and .922 save percentage.
Dineen, native of Fairbault, MN, had a big weekend all coming in one night of work. In Friday nights 6-1 victory he chipped in one goal and three different helpers throughout the course of the game. His first assist came on the first Chill goal of the game to tie it at 1-1 and his first goal came in the 2nd period to put the Chill up 2-1 and ultimately be the game-winning goal. His 2nd assist came just 1:53 and third on an empty-net goal, putting the game well out of reach for Minnesota.
Since joining the Chill at the end of December, Dineen has three goals and nine assists.
The Chill are in action away from home taking on the Minnesota Wilderness once again. The game is set to take place in Cloquet, MN Friday night at 7:30. Go Chill!
