Weekend Recap: Chill Extend Strong 2016, Sweep Weekend

Coulee Region Chill 5, Minnesota Magicians 4

The Chill carried their success in January into last Friday night’s game against the Magicians.  10:37 into the game Scott Corbett – NAHL honorable mention this past weekend – scored (Alex Falconer, Matt Doran assisted) the first and only goal in the 1st period to put the Chill on top 1-0.

Things kept rolling for the Chill at the start of the period as Dom Florian (Alex Lambacher, Isaac Theisen) beat Minnesota goalie Will Ulrich just 1:50 into the period.  Former Magician and also an NAHL honorable mention from this past weekend Larry Jungwirth made it 3-0 with helpers from Jackson Charlesworth and Justin Kendall less than two minutes later.  The Magicians took advantage of a power play and converted on a short-handed goal in the back half of the 2nd but the Chill still carried a 3-2 lead into the 3rd.

Things got interesting at the start of the final frame as Minnesota converted on their 2nd powerplay of the night.  Jungwirth gave the Chill the lead again nine minutes into the period but Brady Heppner tied it back up at 4-4 with less than five minutes to go.

Knotted up at four’s is how the two teams would begin overtime.  After both put three shots on net they went into a shootout.

Nico Luka started the shootout for the Chill.  After Luka failed to capitalize on his one-on-one showdown with Ulrich, Chill goalie Hunter Vorva turned his attention to Jake Cass of the Magicians.  Vorva gave up four goals on 24 shots during regulation but he was a wall on Cass’ shot.  Florian was up next; after carrying some confidence from his 2nd-period goal, he put another past Ulrich and gave the Chill the 1-0 advantage in the shootout.  After Vorva stopped another Magicians shooter, Jungwirth had the opportunity to put the final nail in the coffin against his former team.  Like Florian, Jungwirth came into the shootout with enough confidence in beating his former teammate that he did just that, giving the Chill the 5-4 shootout victory!

Coulee Region Chill 4, Austin Bruins 3

Next up was another showdown with the Bruins in Austin, a rink that the Chill have found success in all season long.  After coming off of a big shootout victory it was going to be key for the Chill to walk into a hostile environment – Pink in the Rink Night for the Bruins – with a level head.

Like the night before, the Chill got off to a fast start with goals from Kevin Dineen (Kendall, Jungwirth) and Joey Sofo (Lambacher, Luka).  Gilbert Gabor finished off the scoring in the first as the Chill went into the 2nd with a 2-1 lead.

After Sofo scored on a powerplay goal in the 1st, Isaac Theisen converted on one of his own 7:43 into the 2nd with help from Florian and Charlesworth.

Over the course of the rest of the 2nd and halfway through the 3rd the Chill let the lead slip through their hands as Bruins Jade Miller and Austin Rueschhoff tied it up.  But with 7:08 remaining Corbett (Caleb Schroer, Phil Erickson) converted on his 2nd goal on the weekend and the Chill would go on to win 4-3 and sweep the weekend.

After Vorva picked up the win Friday night, Matiss Kivlenieks would pick up the win Saturday night after saving 33/36 shots.  Kristofer Carlson took the loss for Austin, saving 15 of the 19 shots he faced.

The Chill will be away again this Friday in a showdown with the 2nd place (Midwest Division) Minnesota Wilderness.  Friday they’ll return home for the first time since January 23rd in a matchup against the Bruins, their final of the season.  Game-night will be presented by McDonald’s Courtesy Corporation with the puck set to drop at 7pm.

Go Chill!
